One of the things I accomplished on my trip is, I finished reading "The Last Will of Moira Leahy" by Therese Walsh. It was one of the best books I've read in awhile! “The number one thing I want to accomplish when it comes to raising my twins is...”

My answer to this questions is... to help them become whoever they are meant to be. One of the things I took away from the book "The Last Will of Moira Leahy" is, everyone should be allowed to become who they truly are inside. I think it can be particularly easy to "box" twin children in, by focusing on how they are alike & how they are different. With twins, and identical twins in particular, I think you have to walk a very fine line in not pushing too hard for them to follow any one direction. Each child should be allowed to follow their own path... but at the same time, you can't deny the joy of twinship, which often means they will share many things in common. And, that's OK... it's the beauty of having a twin.

“As a parent of twins, all I really want for the holidays is...”

My answer to this questions is... All I really want is for my girls to feel the magic of the holidays that I felt growing up. I know a lot of people complain that the holidays are too commercial and all, but I just don't see it that way. As a child, I was obsessed with presents :-) I would make a hundred copies of my Christmas list, trying to get it just right :-p However, while some would worry about that kind of behavior from a child, thinking they'll just become selfish, materialistic adults, you must keep one thing in mind: Children are not simply little adults... everything is a learning process for a child. And the primary way that they learn is observing their parent's actions.

My parents worked very hard each year to make sure we had a great Christmas, even if they didn't have a lot of money. Now that I'm a parent, I do the same... while it's always nice to receive gifts, it just isn't anywhere near as important to me as it was when I was a child. Because, even while caught up in what Barbies or My Little Ponies I wanted each particular year, what was really happening inside of me was this: With each gift, each decoration hung, each trip to see Santa... each way my parents gave of themselves, their time and yes, even money, taught me the true spirit of giving.

Having another "scaled-back" TwinTuesday this week :-) Still just have a lot going on right now... although, again, one of those things is preparing for my big trip! I am flying to Phoenix, Arizona to meet up with some old friends in early December and, since I heard from some fellow Twin Moms (who live near the Phoenix area), that they might be interested in meeting up, I decided to set up the 1st official "TwinTuesday Tweet-Up!" :-) So, here are the details:

When: Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 7PM

Where: Majerle's Sports Grill, 24 North 2nd Street, Phoenix AZ 85004

Who will be there:

There are actually more who have said they'll be there, but I'm waiting to post them until I confirm once again that they will actually be there... the more the merrier, though, so if you'd like to join us, just reply to this post and/or send me an e-mail at jennifer@twinhappy.com :-) I think it'll be a lot of fun! I'm making it at 7 so, everybody can have plenty of time to get there, maybe get something to eat, maybe a couple of drinks... and then if it's your thing (I know it's mine :-p), they start karaoke at 8:30 :-) Hopefully that won't scare some of you off... :-p

Oh and btw--one other thing I'm planning on doing this trip? Finally finishing "The Last Will of Moira Leahy" by @ThereseWalsh! I just still find it so hard to get reading time in nowadays... but, I think this will be the perfect time to finally read this! And then, when I get back, I can finally do not only a review but a giveaway, as well, of this book!

Anyway, back to today's TwinTuesday: I'm again taking a little break from the giveaways... but I think I may actually have one lined up for next week. But, at the very least, I plan on doing my usual TwinTuesday tweet-out (using the names from the TwinTweeters list) and, of course, gotta at least have a QOTW! :-)

Question of the Week:

What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory involving your twins so far?

I know some of you may not have a lot to choose from yet, but I'm actually going to share one from Thanksgiving 2004... which was just shortly after finding out that I was pregnant with twins! We decided that Thanksgiving dinner would be the perfect time to break our news, since the whole family was gathered together anyway. A few actually already knew that I was pregnant... but nobody knew that it was twins, yet! So, it was a great icebreaker for the evening :-) Actually, the only people who did know that we were having twins before the announcement, was my in-laws. And, at dinner, my Mother-in-Law presented me with a baby name book. We actually already had names picked out... one for a girl (Anna), one for a boy (Robert). Although, while we did not yet know the sexes of our twins, we knew the possibility existed that, we would have to pick out a second boy's or girl's name. I was never able to decide on a second boy's name... which, ultimately turned out to be unnecessary, of course :-p But, I actually found a second girl's name in the book that I settled on almost immediately: Josephine (or Josie, for short). Not only did I like sound of both the full and shortened version of the name, but the description of what the name meant just seemed perfect, too: "May God grant you another child." I'll admit that I'm not a particularly religious person... but, I couldn't help think, "That He did... that He did..." :-D

Hey! First, I need to apologize for not being around as much lately... I just got busy on some other projects, and unfortunately had to put TwinHappy stuff on the back burner a bit. However, I certainly can't miss TwinTuesday :-) At least not completely...

I am still pretty busy, so I've decided to scale things back just a little bit... however, one of the things I've been busy with is getting ready for my trip to Phoenix! And, it's there that we'll actually be having our first TwinTuesday Tweet-Up! :-) Here are the details:

Do you think your twins are closer than the average pair of siblings?

I would have to say definitely yes. I didn't think so when they were babies... they seemed almost unaware that the other was there (except for maybe if one would vomit on the other and then the one who got vomited on would just kind of blink and look around like, "Where'd that come from..." :-p). But, the older they get, the closer they seem to get, as well. And, even though they occasionally have same kinds of disagreements (OK fights :-p) that I had with my siblings growing up (and I'm sure everyone who has siblings has had)... for the most part, they play/work exceptionally well together... they draw books together, if one gets a treat, they have to make sure their sister gets one, too... I could go on with a million examples, but I'll just ask, how would you answer this question?

What kind of experiences have you had, that could only happen to a parent of twins?

One thing I know has happened to many other parents of twins (myself included), is, having a doctor prescribe 2 of the same medication for each twin (like amoxycillin or whatever it may be), and then having to fight with an insurance company who only sees the one birth date and denies the 2nd prescription. It seems like every parent of twins I talk to, at one point or another, has had to explain to an insurance company the concept that, two children can be born on the same day :-p

So, what's your experience? You know you've had 'em! :-)

Do you dress your twins alike?

This is a question that I've asked before, but not for awhile, so I figured what the heck :-) My answer is... when I first found out I was having twins, I was determined to not dress them alike. Maybe coordinating, but not exactly alike. After awhile, I started dressing them alike quite often, if for no other reason than, it was easier :-p Both shopping-wise (just grabbing two of an outfit that you like is easier than trying to find two different outfits that at least sort of go together)... and dressing-wise (again, just easier to grab two of the same). Plus, I think you can get kind of caught up in the whole twin-fame thing :-p However, now they're very rarely dressed exactly alike. I do have a tendency to try and coordinate them, but at this point, if their clothes are clean and season/activity-appropriate (or if I can get them to wear clothes at all), I'm happy :-p

Now, here's the Question of the Week:

What do you do, besides taking care of twins? :-)

While I tend to focus on twin parenting on my site/blog here, I think it's good to remember, every once in awhile, that we are more than JUST parents to twins :-) So, I thought it would be fun to share what else everyone does, when not lost in bottles and diapers, or sippy cups and the piles of toys left laying in the path of your twinadoes :-p

As for me, I've spent pretty much my entire adult life on the internet :-p When I graduated high school, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. I ended up attending Peabody Prepatory here in Baltimore to study piano, because that was what my Dad wanted me to do :-) But, while I did enjoy playing piano (and still do... my Dad actually recently gave me a really awesome, ridiculously expensive, keyboard that I'm still trying to figure out... he's nothing, if not persistent :-p)... but, when it turned into something I HAD to do, I didn't want to do it anymore. So, I only went for 3 semesters until finally dropping out... I just felt like I was wasting both my and my teacher's time.

So, I kind of wandered from one crap job to another... first starting out in things like fast food and waitressing (OK, so I was only a waitress for 3 weeks at Friendly's... I have great respect for wait staff, because I was a horrible waitress :-p)... then I started doing a lot of low-level office work. Worked for some lawyers in downtown Baltimore for awhile... that was interesting :-p And, then my last job was as a receptionist for a pension plan administrator in Towson, MD...

The most exciting part of that job was when I got a call from some gruff individual who simply said, "David -----, please." Well, as I had been instructed to do, I politely said, "May I ask who's calling?" And, he replied, even more gruffly, "Just put David on the phone!" Well, as I later found out, that was Johnny Unitas :-p God rest his soul, and I don't want to offend anyone who might still love him, but my one encounter with him left me thinking, "What a dick!" :-p

ANYWAY, I left that job in the summer of 1996, when I was just 21 years old. That was my last "REAL" job :-p Ever since, I've made my living on the web, working on websites and this, that or the other :-p Money on the web was a lot easier to come by back then... and, things really dropped off when the girls were born and I got lost in the Mommy Hood. But, now that they're getting older, starting school and all, I'm trying to get back into things... trying hard to re-invent myself here :-)

Now, here's the Question of the Week (it's kind of 3 questions in one, but they're all related :-p):

How many weeks gestation were your twins at birth? How much did they weigh? NICU time?

My answer is 30.5 weeks, due to complications from (undiagnosed) TTTS. Josie was 2 lbs 12 oz and Anna was 3 lbs 15 oz. They spent exactly one month in the NICU (born May 1st, released June 1st), and are now perfectly healthy and happy! :-) We were very lucky...

Now, I usually do a photo challenge, but it hasn't been very popular in the past few weeks, so I'm dropping it for now. If you'd like to see it come back, though, please just let me know! I'd be happy to bring it back :-) But, in the meantime, you can still feel free to share photos with everyone... I just won't be picking a specific theme to follow...

The QOTW was: Do you think your twins have more or less problems with separation anxiety, because they are twins?

My response to this question was, I believe that my girls have had little to no problems with separation anxiety, at least partially because, they're used to having more than just me around :-) While I have a great bond with my girls, they also have each other... as well as their Father, their older (teenage) half-brother and sister who live with us, their Grandparents who they spend the night with on occasion... I think it's made them feel really secure that whether I'm with them or not, they will always be well taken care of. And, no matter your family situation, I think having a twin can definitely help a child realize that they are never truly alone.

Of course, this is just my personal experience... here are some other responses:

@Jezfarmer they don't mind leaving mum and dad as long as they have each other. All alone is a no no.

@katepickle no problems separating from me... HUGE problems separating from each other!

@glidinglara so far, at 4 months, I'd say less. Because they're so used to being passed around.

@soulsistahd No separation anxiety, but it's not because they're twins. They've been in daycare since they were 2 months old.

MrsCBerger I don't know yet! I hope less because they will be more accustomed to people coming and going and adjusted to change.

writercarrie Mine are almost 11 months, and I've yet to see it. I wonder if it's because they are used to multiple caregivers?

luckyduck21 My twins seem to have more probs w/sep anxiety. They're rarely apart and when they are each asks for the other.

childsplayx2 Our shy twin does benefit from being a twin - there is less anxiety. But they do have anxiety being separated from each other.

indigoeyes One twin is more attach to the other than the other way around. But their sep. anxiety w/ me is about same.

ToddDavis1969 In our 19 mo. old ID boys, we have one twin that is more independent & one that desires more attention/will spontaneously hug

@WildFlowerSweet my twins were just split up in K. 1 was a trooper about it, the other took a while to get used to it.

@childsplayx2 Today my wife is going to pick up our son early to do a 1on1 date. Daughter is freaking out a bit. *sigh*

renae_m4r Mine have HUGE separation anxiety. At 17.5 mo, they won't leave my side or each other. I don't think it is normal.

Have you noticed that your twins like to play with each other, more than with others?

This was a subject that was brought up during my recent trip to TwinsDays in Twinsburg, OH. The girls spent a lot of time playing with the equipment that Step2 had provided just outside the front gates, as did a lot of other children in their age group. I remember specifically that Anna & Josie had a great time playing with first one set of twin girls, then a set of twin boys, and then another set of twin girls. Part of it might have been that they just all really enjoyed the equipment :-) But, the father of the twin boys actually said to me, "Normally, we could have a house full of kids for a birthday party or whatever, and they'll be off playing with each other." I've actually noticed the same thing with Anna & Josie... but, this time, the two sets of twins (whichever set they happened to be playing with at the time) would be interacting with each other quite a bit... I don't know if it was just something about the dynamic, of it being two and two or what... but, it was really quite interesting to see!

This #TwinTuesday is going to be a little different... we're not really doing a specific giveaway for #TwinTuesday, because we're already doing a bunch of giveaways as part of #Twinstock! Plus, I've started a QOTD over there, and I just think having #TwinTuesday stuff on top of all that is just a little too much. However, I will still count any tweets with #TwinTuesday in the message as contest entries... I'll just be putting them into the pool of entries for the #Twinstock Giveaways!

Every Tuesday is TwinTuesday here at TwinHappy! :-) TwinTuesday is basically a weekly chat/party celebrating all things "twin!" :-) First, there's the "Question of the Week"... just check the latest TwinTuesday posting for this week's question. Feel free to answer it by replying to that post, on Twitter (using the hashtag #TwinTuesday), or on the TwinHappy Facebook page!

You can also take this opportunity to chat with other twin parents... ask questions... answer others' questions... tell funny stories... share pictures/video... tell the twin community about your twin-related cause or business... and anything else you can think of related to twins! This is your day Twin Moms (and Dads, Grandmas, etc. :-p)! Celebrate it however you'd like!

And that's really all there is to it... there are other things I do to try and keep the party going... again, just check the latest TwinTuesday posting for this week's schedule! Also, each week we usually do some sort of giveaway. To enter, all you have to do is participate in TwinTuesday, either by replying to the current TwinTuesday posting, posting on the TwinHappy Facebook page, or tweeting (remember to use the #TwinTuesday hashtag!)...

The next #TwinTuesday is August 11, 2009!

This week's #TwinTuesday sponsor is... me (@TwinHappyJen)! :-) Before I switched the "TwinHappy" menu around, and added a button to the TwinHappy Community, I just had a banner link at the bottom of each page to it... but now that it's on the menu, I've been considering replacing that banner with a sponsor of some sort.

At least for now, though, I've decided I'm just going to give it away to a different twin blog/site each month :-) So, the giveaway this week is that banner space! Will you/did you separate your twins when they start(ed) school?

My answer to this is... I wasn't sure, until the school made the decision for me :-) Anna and Josie are starting preschool this year! And, when I was last in there, they actually did give me the option of keeping them together or separating them. At the time, I told them I was still on the fence about it... and they said that was fine, there was still plenty of time to make a decision. Well, I never got around to offering my opinion, so they just automatically put them in separate classes.

At first I was upset about it (mostly at myself for not getting back to them sooner), but I quickly realized it's probably for the best. I think it can be a good idea for some twins to stick together (at least when first starting school)... and I think it should always be up to the parents, especially when first starting school. But, for my particular girls, I think it might be better for them to be in separate classes. For one, they have no problems with shyness, going into new situations, etc. I, on the other hand, could have used a twin on my first day of kindergarten... I was so overwhelmed! :-p However, I think they're going to be just fine on their own.

Also, because they're identical twins, it will not only make it easier on their teacher and the other students to be able to tell them apart, but this way, they can just be another member of the class and not "the twins." I think it could also be very frustrating for them to be constantly called by the wrong name, or being asked "which one are you?" I actually just saw a video this morning that illustrated this very well @ http://bonggafinds.blogspot.com/2009/08/is-separating-twins-really-answer.html

However, every person (including every twin, of course!), every situation, etc. is different... so how would you/did you answer this question?

Do you know any other twins/parents of twins IRL (in real life)?

My own answer to this question is... not really :-p Not that I haven't met any, but all my twin friendships are really online friendships. Not that I really have many "real-life" friendships, period anymore... my life very much revolves around family, work, etc. now. Most of my "old friends" do not have children so, while I still think fondly of them, we just don't have a lot in common, anymore. For awhile after having the girls, I started to feel very isolated. Lately, though, as I've really gotten into blogging, Twitter, etc. I've started to make some great online friendships which have helped a lot. Also, with the girls starting school this year, I hope to get involved with a lot of things there and do some "real life" socializing that way. I really wonder, though, if there are other twin parents in the neighborhood that I just don't know about! :-p Maybe I'll find out soon...

What is your favorite thing about having twins?

The #TwinTuesday "Question of the Week" is:

What is the one piece of advice you would give to a new parent of twins?

My answer to this question is: Ask for help... and, keep asking :-) While everybody gets excited over the birth of twins, and will offer to help (especially babysitting), the reality is, people often get caught up in their own lives. Plus, if you think caring for twin babies is tougher than caring for just one... so do those people who offered to babysit :-) A lot of people may think that when you have multiples, you get more help than someone who has a singleton, but in a lot of cases, you get less. So, that's why you have to ask for it... and keep asking. Those that truly care about you will want to help, but they may need a reminder... or even several reminders. Do not see it as a sign of weakness... it takes a lot of strength to ask for help when you need it. The natural tendency for many new Moms is to try and do it all... be SuperMom. But, even super heroes need breaks from time to time :-) And, if you want those around you to appreciate what you do every day, there's no better way to illustrate that, than to let them do, what you do, for a little while :-)

3) Twin Happy Hour: Normally we do "Twin Trivia" starting at 9PM (ET), but I've decided to switch things up a bit and do something different. We will still do TwinTrivia from time to time, but from now on, I've decided to call the hour of tweeting between 9 and 10 PM (ET), Twin Happy Hour (get it? :-p) and do something different each week! This week we'll make it a time to share all those "You might have twins if..." jokes :-) The last time we did this, everybody came up with some great ones (I gotta start archiving these!)... so let's give it another run! :-)

In fact, going to try out something new for this one... in addition to being on Twitter, I will actually be live on webcam for Twin Happy Hour!
